A piece of music history sold for millions over the weekend.
Kurt Cobain’s guitar from Nirvana’s 1991 “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video sold at auction for far more than the pre-auction estimate of $600,000.
Cobain’s 1969 Fender Mustang Competition Lake Placid blue finish electric guitar sold for $4.5 million.
The sale capped Julien’s Auctions music icons auction, which raised nearly $15 million.
Part of the proceeds from the guitar and other Cobain items will go to Kicking the Stigma, an initiative which aims to raise awareness about mental health disorders.
Other items belonging to Cobain that were up for auction included his 1965 Dodge Dart, NFTs of his green striped sweater worn in the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video and his worn converse shoes, Cobain’s painting of Michael Jackson and more.
