A ‘cluster’ of patients and staff at Harborview Medical Center tested positive for COVID-19, officials announced Friday.
A total of 10 staff members and four patients tested positive.
One patient has since died. A Harborview representative said the patient had a number of other underlying conditions.
The outbreak was originally detected between Sept. 29 and Oct. 2.
An additional 30 staff members are quarantining after potential exposure to the virus, many of them from the hospital’s surgery unit. Hospitals administrators admit that there is unexpected stress on the unit with so many personnel out, but they’re working through it.
The staff who is quarantining is doing so out of an abundance of caution. Dr. John Lynch, medical director of Infection Prevention & Control, said any healthcare worker who was not wearing eye protection in the unit was potentially exposed and taken off the floor.
