City looks at impact of Capitol Hill Block Party; its future up in air

SEATTLE — Future changes could come to the Capitol Hill Block Party as the growing size of the event over the years has raised concerns.

Some people who live and work in the area said they are growing tired of the impact from the 3-day annual event that draws thousands.

Haven Yates, who works security for the block party, said, “It seems like a lot of residents and businesses around the area are having issues with access.

Organizers have been trying to work through some concerns like, too much trash and business dwindling because of the party."

This year the city of Seattle hired a consulting firm to research and help keep a close eye on the event.

Depending on the results, the historic event could see big changes.

Attendee Sebastian Lerner said, “I completely understand the concerns, and if truly those are concerns, I can’t blame them for bringing those up. But at the end of the day, I’ve never seen a neighborhood in a major city bring together so many people.”

“And we also are affiliated with several of the businesses along here and they end up being part of the Capitol Hill Block Party itself,” Yates said.

“And we also are affiliated with several of the businesses along here and they end up being part of the Capitol Hill Block Party itself,” Yates said.“We really would like to be able to get some feedback, and really just make it easier for everybody. We love (the) block party."

A consulting firm was supposed to do a survey on impacts earlier this year, but it’s been postponed until next month.
