2-alarm fire with explosions in Kent

A two-alarm fire burned a Kent business Thursday morning, though no injuries were reported.

The fire started about 3:30 a.m. at AAA Welding Company, at 22610 85 Place S. Several businesses were in the building, and firefighters were fighting the fire defensively to try and keep it from spreading.

The scene was about 19 miles south of Seattle. The building was constructed in 1979 and did not have sprinklers, Deputy Fire Marshall Keith Kepler said.

The cause was not immediately clear.

Fire crews first saw flames coming from the corner of the building and crews heard explosions. They didn’t immediately pinpoint what caused the explosions, but that kept them from entering the building and there were exterior propane tanks on fire.

Smoke was blowing across State Route affecting traffic into the 5 a.m. hour. The second fire alarm was called shortly after 4 a.m.
