11-year-old girl shot herself with mom’s gun while recording a video, police say

LAKEWOOD, Wash. — An 11-year-old Lakewood girl died after shooting herself with her mother’s gun while recording a video, police said.

The girl’s 10-year-old brother called police around 11 p.m. Monday. Officers responded to their apartment near 86th Street and Steilacoom Boulevard.

When they arrived, the found the girl with a gunshot wound to her head. She was taken to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

An initial investigation shows that the girl had gotten access to her mom’s gun, and was recording a video of herself when the gun went off, a press release said.

Investigators are working to determine if the shooting was accidental or suicide, and how she gained access to the gun.
