Numerous cars involved in 5 crashes on stretch of I-5

KENT, Wash. — All but one lane of the southbound Interstate 5 between Kent and Federal way were closed  after five crashes involving numerous cars injured at least one person Tuesday afternoon.

The state DOT said a crash occurred just south of SR 516 and the Washington State Patrol said a crash scene was at South 272nd Street.  A WSDOT camera showed a crash scene at South 248th Street.

The crashes occurred around 2:30 p.m. Only the HOV lane was open for hours.  By 4:45 p.m., three lanes were open but the backup stretched for 10 miles.

The Kent Fire Department said at least one person was extricated from a vehicle and transported to Harborview with non-life-threatening injuries.

The WSP said the official total appeared to be five multi-car collisions.  At least two of those collisions involved five cars and seven cars.
