Hundreds gather to remember teen who died after ‘car surfing'

KENT, Wash. — Hundreds of students came to the high school’s stadium Friday night to remember a classmate who died after falling off a moving car in the school’s parking lot.

"He made everyone smile,” one student said.

"Lupo's stories. We all got 'em, right?” said Benson’s football coach as the crowd laughed.

On Tuesday, police say Kent-Meridian High School senior Lupo Benson was car surfing after school.

He was on the car's hood for 20 seconds before he was thrown off when the car made a sharp turn.

As many as 40 students watched.

It's not clear how fast the car was going.

"Lupo died on impact, he did not suffer,” said Lupo’s father. "That he impacted this many people, I was shocked.”

His son was remembered for being himself and encouraging others to do the same. His father is especially proud that Lupo was an organ donor – and doctors say more than 50 people will benefit.

The King County Prosecutor will decide whether the car’s driver gets charged.
