WSDOT: Internal leak on new SR 520 Bridge pontoon fixed

SEATTLE — One of the pontoons for the new State Route 520 Bridge sprung an internal leak, which has since been repaired, the Washington State Department of Transportation said Monday.

The water was not leaking in from Lake Washington.

“Instead,” WSDOT said in a news release, “it involves water that we added to the inside of the pontoons as temporary ballast to lower them to the height of the new bridge.”

The agency included a short video of the leak:

“In this one location shown in the video, there was a small hole between separate, water tight compartments inside the pontoon,” WSDOT said. “The hole was repaired as part of the inspection process.”
