New avalanche bridge opens across Snoqualmie Pass

SEATTLE — Travelers in western Washington are now able to drive along a newly constructed avalanche bridge on Snoqualmie Pass.

State transportation officials opened up the new eastbound bridge, which stretches along 15 miles of Interstate 90, on Tuesday.

"You will notice that the drive over the bridge is going to be a little tight, just like most areas across the pass due to construction and the need to shift traffic around the work zone. It’s going to be important to pay close attention to the road and obey the speed limit across the pass," said Megan Lott on the WSDOT Blog.

Two-way traffic has been moved to the new roadway as crews begin construction of a second avalanche bridge right next to it.

Officials say the new project will allow avalanches to flow safely under traffic, reducing the number of avalanche-related closures on the interstate.
