SEATTLE — The Mariners have placed right-handed pitcher Félix Hernández to the 10-day disabled list with lower-back stiffness, the team announced Tuesday. Seattle also optioned outfielder John Andreoli to Triple-A Tacoma and recalled infielder Gordon Beckham and right-handed pitcher Nick Rumbelow.
Hernández’s stint on the disabled list is retroactive to July 8. Landing on the DL against next week’s All-Star break gives Hernández extra time to heal with limited impact – he would miss just one start if he were to return after the break, which is set for July 16-19.
Hernández first experienced back issues before his June 30 start against the Kansas City Royals. He made it just five innings and 81 pitches in that outing, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk to earn the win. He went five innings again on July 6, allowing three runs on eight hits and no walks, throwing 94 pitches in a 7-1 loss to Colorado.
For the year, Hernández is 8-7 with a 5.13 ERA. This is is first DL stint of the season, though he has been hampered by injuries in recent years.
Beckham, 31, has appeared in 12 games for the Mariners this season, primarily filling in at second base. In those games, he batted .206 and recorded seven hits and one run.
Rumbelow, 26, had six relief appearances for the Mariners from June 14 to July 7, and posted a 4.91 ERA with seven strikeouts and one walk.
Andreoli has appeared in two games over two stints with Seattle this season. He is 1 for 5 with a walk for the M’s.
