Wrong-way driver runs from fiery crash in DuPont

DuPont, Wash. — A man driving a car that may have been stolen crashed while driving southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 after a police pursuit was called off.

The KIRO 7 assignment desk started hearing about the chase near Bridgeport Way in Lakewood at about 2:15 a.m. Tuesday.

Police were pursuing the driver, who initially was heading southbound in the southbound lanes. The driver then exited the freeway and got back onto Interstate 5, heading southbound in the northbound lanes.

Police then ended the pursuit for safety reasons. Shortly after, the driver crashed on an embankment on the side of the freeway near Center Drive near Joint Base Lewis-McChord and the car caught fire.

Firefighters responded to put out the flames.

The driver fled the crash scene and is still at large.
