Woman shot in stomach at Renton park dies

RENTON, Wash. — A woman who was shot twice in the abdomen Wednesday evening in Renton's Liberty Park has died, police said.

Renton police received 911 calls before 8:30 p.m. about a shooting at the park.

When officers arrived, they found a 20-year-old woman lying on the east side of the park.

The fire department said the woman was taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition, and her injuries were described as life-threatening. On Thursday morning, the woman died from her injuries.

According to Renton police, information from witnesses and surveillance video indicated there was an argument between two women, both with groups.

During the fight, at least one man from each group pulled out a gun and an unknown number of shots were fired between the groups.

After the shooting, most of the people fled.

Shomari Anderson told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News he was playing basketball when he heard about eight shots and ran. He said he didn't wait around to see whether anyone was hit.

The Parks Department turned on playfield lights so that police could search for evidence.

A KIRO 7 news crew spotted about six shell casings marked with yellow markers in the corner of a parking lot.

A police commander pointed out the spot where the wounded woman was found lying in the grass about 20 or 30 feet from where the shell casings were found.

A man was detained nearby and questioned by police, but then was released pending further investigation.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact Renton police at 425-430-7500.
