Viaduct closed for weekend inspection, maintenance

SEATTLE — The Alaskan Way Viaduct will be closed for its semiannual inspection and routine maintenance.

From SoDo to Fremont, State Route 99 will be closed for crews to inspect and reinforce the viaduct and upgrade expansion joints on the Aurora Bridge.

It is scheduled to reopen before and after Sunday’s Sounders FC match against the Portland Timbers at CenturyLink Field.

"This critical work on the viaduct and the Aurora Bridge requires major closures, but more than 60,000 fans need to get to the match and back home," said Matt Preedy, WSDOT Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Program deputy administrator. "We scheduled the work so crews would not disrupt traffic before and after the game."

Also this weekend, the Aurora Bridge will be reduced to one lane in each direction for expansion joint replacement and repairs.

Crews will work until 5 a.m. Monday.

The southbound lanes will be opened from three 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday for the Sounders match as well. The northbound lanes will be homed from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m.
