VIDEO: Mom of UW rape suspect confrontational in court

The University of Washington senior arrested on suspicion of raping a 12-year-old girl pleaded not guilty Thursday to second-degree child rape – and his mother had an outburst at a KIRO 7 cameraman.

Omar Abdelbadie, a neurobiology major and member of the dean's list, allegedly met a 12-year-old girl on University Way Northeast – better known as "The Ave" – earlier this month.

Police said he smoked marijuana with the girl before they went back to his apartment. According to Washington State law, sex between a 22-year-old and a 12-year-old is child rape in the second degree.

He was told numerous times the girl was 12 before she spent the night in his apartment near campus, according to prosecutors. After their sexual encounter they went to Green Lake for ice cream, police said.

Abdelbadie's public defender argued that he needed to be out of jail to finish finals, but a judge set bail at $100,000. UW's degreee verification website does not show a degree for Abdelbadie.

After Abdelbadie's arraignment, his mother grabbed a KIRO 7 camera and claimed her picture could not be taken in the public space. The shoulder of Abdelbadie's attorney also hit a KIRO cameraman, and the attorney later apologized.
