US 2 from Stevens Pass to Leavenworth reopens to traffic

Highway 2 from Stevens Pass to Leavenworth reopened Tuesday afternoon after being closed due to downed trees on the roadway and snowy conditions.

The closure started Saturday night from Milepost 64 at the summit of Stevens Pass to Milepost 99 at the west end of Leavenworth.

Crews were hoping to have the highway reopened by Monday, but more trees fell on Sunday night.

Officials with the Washington State Department of Transportation said they had planned to bring a large helicopter Wednesday to blow snow from the trees if the conditions continued.

On Friday afternoon, a falling tree hit a vehicle at Milepost 78 killing two people and injuring four. On Saturday another tree fell and struck a car at Milepost 77, which injured five people.
