Trump told Christie he didn't think his campaign would continue past October 2015, CNN book claims

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump stands on stage with New Jersey Governor Chris Christie at the Lawrenceville National Guard Armory in Trump's first public campaign appearance in New Jersey on May 19, 2016 in Lawrenceville, New Jersey.

Did Donald Trump's campaign go on longer than even the candidate himself thought it would?

According to a new book, the answer is yes.

CNN Politics is taking an in-depth look at the 2016 presidential campaign in "Unprecedented: The Election that Changed Everything."

"Trump told (New Jersey Gov. Chris) Christie in 2015 that he didn't expect to make it past October - at which point he would endorse Christie, according to a Christie adviser who asked not to be named in order to speak about behind-the-scenes maneuvers," the book says.

The book was written by Thomas Lake with reporting by Jodi Enda, Susan Baer and the CNN political team.

During the Republican primary, Marco Rubio was a common target. The plan was that Trump would praise Christie for defeating Rubio during a debate in New Hampshire.

Christie and Trump knew one another before the campaign through New York and New Jersey politics. They didn't attack one another as they did other candidates, CNN wrote in the book.

Christie lead Trump's transition team though the election until last week, when Vice President-elect Mike Pence took over the organization of the administration.

The book will be published Dec. 6, but can be pre-ordered now.
