Prince movie 'Purple Rain' returning to theaters

LEAWOOD, Kan. — The late singer Prince will be back in theaters this weekend.

"Purple Rain," the 1984 movie that is considered by many to have made Prince into a huge star, will be back in theaters across the country this weekend at select locations.

Variety reported that AMC is screening the movie across 87 theaters.

AMC confirmed the news with a tweet:

The film stars Prince as The Kid, who uses music to cope with a tumultuous relationship with this father and and navigate a relationship with Apollonia, played by Apollonia Kotero, while dealing with rival musician Morris, portrayed by Morris Day.

AMC isn't the only theater making this tribute. Carmike Cinemas is playing the movie at 80 theaters in 24 states, according to a Friday news release.

VH1 will be airing the movie -- which won an Oscar for Original Song Score in 1985 -- throughout the weekend.
