North Carolina police catch armed man at high school in Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A Virginia man was arrested at a North Carolina high school Monday after showing up with a weapon, WGHP reported.

Steve Brantley Spence, of Norfolk, was taken into custody, police said. Police seized a loaded 9mm handgun, a loaded .45-caliber gun, a long gun and a backpack containing eight boxes of bullets, the television station reported.

Spence was reported by a school employee, who was working as a monitor in the cafeteria at Smith High School in Greensboro, the News & Record reported. The employee noticed that Spence did not fit in and confronted him, the newspaper reported, citing a police report.

When Spence began to run away, the employee noticed he was armed and called for a lockdown while moving students out of the area, WGHP reported. Spence left the cafeteria and went into the courtyard area, Greensboro police Chief Wayne Scott said.

Officers took Spence into custody on the edge of the school property after using a Taser to subdue him, the television station reported.

Spence was involved in an assault in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Monday morning, Scott said. Spence allegedly stole the victim's car and drove to Smith High School, WGHP reported.

Greensboro police said they did not believe Spence, but that his intended target may have been someone he had a personal relationship with, the television station reported.
