Mom, son attacked by giraffe continue to recover

A mother and her young son who were both attacked by a giraffe near their home are recovering.

Katy Williams and her son Finn are both in the hospital healing from the vicious attack near their home on a nature preserve in South Africa, Jack Standish, Williams' father, told ABC News.

Finn was expected to be taken off a ventilator Thursday, but will remain sedated as he recovers from his injuries, ABC News reported.

He will need more surgeries, but doctors said they will be cosmetic procedures to repair damage to his head. Finn did suffer a brain injury, but doctors do not expect any long-term effects.

Katy Williams recently regained consciousness and has been told how her son is progressing, ABC News reported.

A female giraffe attacked the mother and son because experts believe they surprised her and she felt that Williams and her son were a threat to her two-month-old calf.

Standish said that his daughter and grandson went from a wooded area to a clearing when the giraffe saw them.

Katy Williams and her husband, Sam Williams, who chased off the giraffe and saw the attack on his family, are both scientists in animal-related fields, CBS News reported.

Both Katy Williams and Finn remained in intensive care, the "Today" show reported.
