Family's dog killed by guard at Honolulu airport

An Aloha Airlines passenger plane departs the Honolulu International Airport, Sunday, March 30, 2008 in Honolulu.

HONOLULU — A Hawaiian family's move ended in heartbreak as their dog was shot by a security guard at Honolulu International Airport.

The incident happened Tuesday evening outside of the interisland terminal, according to KHON.

According to Leisha Ramos, the family was moving from Hawaii to Oahu and their 2-year-old pit bull, Kaiele, was sent via Aloha Cargo. Jadd Matsuda, Ramos' boyfriend, picked up the dog and then waited for Ramos. When she arrived, Kaiele was tied to a nearby tree so that Ramos could place her luggage in the vehicle and the dog could relieve itself after the long trip.

A security guard approached the family and told them to leave. Shortly after, Kaiele escaped and was shot by the guard.

Ramos said she's heartbroken, and she loved the dog like a son. She said Kaiele was not aggressive.

The state Department of Transportation confirmed the incident to KHON but declined to release additional information as the incident remains under investigation.

The family plans to take legal action, according to HawaiiNewsNow.
