PARIS — Officials closed Paris’ iconic Eiffel Tower on Monday after a man was spotted scaling the monument, according to multiple reports.

Update 9:50 p.m. EDT May 20: The Eiffel Tower will reopen on Tuesday after Paris officials closed it Monday when a man started climbing the famous landmark.

“The Eiffel Tower will reopen tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m.,” officials with Eiffel Tower Tours tweeted Monday night.

The climber, who spent more than six hours clinging to the tower, was arrested once he reached the top of the monument, the BBC reported.

It’s unclear why the man scaled the Eiffel Tower, but a tower spokeswoman told Reuters he entered the landmark “normally and started to climb once he was on the second floor.”

Original report: The tower's operator confirmed Monday on Twitter that the tower was "closed until further notice."

A police spokeswoman told Reuters a man walked into the tower Monday and started to climb once he'd reached the second floor. According to Ireland's The Independent, the second floor is at 149 meters (about 499 feet) while the entirety of the tower is 276 meters (about 906 feet) tall.
