Day care worker accused of making child urinate in cup for son's drug test

ROCK HILL, S.C. — A mother told police that a day care worker tried to use urine from her 8-year-old son, so the employee’s son could pass a drug test. The unidentified mother said her son was told to urinate in a cup, and he didn't know why.

Gloria Bowens is assistant director at New Beginnings Child Care Center in Rock Hill, North Carolina, and her son is the one accused of needing the clean urine sample.

She told WSOC that she regrets what happened, and apologized to the family.

"I talked to her, and I thought everything was OK," Bowens said. "I don't want to lose my job over no mess like this."

According to the police report, the child's mother accuses Bowens and her 31-year-old son of waking the boy from a nap last week at New Beginnings Child Care and getting him to urinate in a bottle, so they could save the urine sample for a drug test.

Bowens said her son was recently let out of jail on a child support charge, and was having trouble getting a job. She said it shouldn't have happened.

"This boy put me through a whole lot, and I told him to leave the day care, and when it happened he left the day care and then he called me back and threatened me," she said.

Several parents like Christina Payne were stunned to hear something like that happened.

"I don't see how that woman could do that. That's wrong. I bet the parents are very, very upset," Payne said.

The child's parents were not identified by police, and couldn't be reached for comment Wednesday.

No charges have been filed, as police have just started investigating the case. WSOC was told they could file charges for altering or defeating a drug screen.

Officials with the Department of Social Services told WSOC that New Beginnings Child Care Center has a good rating with the agency, and there are no other active complaints.  DSS did not answer questions about this specific case.
