The Humane Society of Louisiana has adopted 32 horses through its Mardi Gras Horse Adoption Program since it started in 2017, WWL reported.

"This program is truly a life-saver for these wonderful creatures, some of whom have faced uncertain futures in the past," Jeff Dorson, director of the animal rescue group, told WAFB. "They serve as important parts in our Carnival season, so it's necessary and fair that we provide them with safe harborage and care after they have provided us with weeks of entertainment and frivolity."

Cascade Stables brings in additional horses to meet demand by Mardi Gras krewes who want them as part of the parade festivities, WWL reported. After the parade season, the stable does not have enough space for the additional horses. In the past they would be sent back to auction, sold to a broker or for slaughter.

The horses will be available March 6.
