Man critically injured, traffic light downed in Fairwood crash

RENTON, Wash. — A powerful crash critically injured a man and caused a metal pole supporting three traffic lights to lean in the Fairwood area of Renton Thursday.

The impact of the 3 p.m. crash caused one of the signals to fall off the pole and into the street at the intersection of 140th Avenue Southeast and Petrovitsky.

The crash only appeared to involve a single vehicle that crashed head-on into the pole.

Police said that after the crash, the car caught fire.  A passerby with a fire extinguisher helped put out the flames.

A man who was in the car was trapped and had to be extricated by firefighters.

He was transported to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.
