Former Rainier School supervisor found guilty of attempted rape

PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. — A supervisor who worked at the Rainier State School for the intellectually and developmentally disabled in Buckley was found guilty Thursday of second-degree attempted rape of a non-verbal autistic adult client.

A jury also found Terry Wayne Shepard, 62, guilty of two counts of second-degree indecent liberties.

This comes after Shepard was reportedly caught in the client’s room in November 2016, by an employee at the school, with his pants and underwear down around his knees, according to Pierce County officials.

The employee told police she found Shepard in the client's room and his back to the door after looking for him to ask if she could take her break, officials said.

The employee also told police the client was on their back, legs pinned up, and Shepard was making back-and-forth movements, appearing to have sex with the client, officials said.

According to officials, the employee told police Shepard was startled and turned around with his genitals exposed.

Shepard is expected to be sentenced on July 27 and could get life in prison.
