Pierce County deputies show off K9 training learned in Slovakia

PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. — Two Pierce County Sheriff's K9 deputies returned from Slovakia with some new tactics.

The deputies spent a week in the City of Žilina where they trained with police K9 units.

According to information from the sheriff's department, K9 units are used much differently in Slovakia. Police dogs are typically used for crowd control, especially when dealing with "hooligans" at soccer matches and other sporting events. In Zilina, dogs wear steel quick release muzzles and are trained to charge at people, hitting them in the face.

PCSD K9 training in Slovakia

Two of our K9 deputies have returned from their exchange training in Slovakia and they have some pretty awesome photos and videos to share with all of you. The deputies spent one week in the city of Zilina training with the city, state, and national police K9 units; their experience included SWAT, firearms, patrol, search & rescue, and narcotics K9 training, as well as a very interesting ride along with a local police chief. They learned that one of the biggest differences between K9 deployment in there and in the US is that in Slovakia K9s are primarily used for crowd control - especially in dealing with large numbers of "hooligans" at soccer matches and other sporting events. Their K9s wear large steel quick release muzzles; K9s are trained to charge at troublemakers and to hit them in the face with the muzzle, stunning and/or knocking out the offender. Check out this awesome video of PCSD K9 Deputy Hardesty getting to experience this up close and personal... and K9 Deputy Munson getting in a few good laughs at his expense!
