Marvin Road overpass to close starting Friday for reconstruction

LACEY, Wash. — There will be an around-the-clock closure at the Marvin Road overpass starting Friday.

The closure is for the continuing diverging diamond project in Lacey.

Construction crews are reconfiguring the I-5 and State Route 510 interchange, which is intended to ease congestion with fewer chances for crashes.  It will allow drivers to make a free left turn onto the highway without stopping at a traffic light.

The closure will only be temporary and will last from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Sept. 30.

The northbound I-5 exit to Marvin Road will also close during that time.

Southbound Marvin Road near I-5 is reduced to one lane and the reduction will last until mid-November. It will allow work crews to rebuild the Marvin Road on-ramp to northbound I-5.

The Washington Department of Transportation said the overall project will benefit all users of the I-5/Marvin Road Interchange and all modes of transportation.

Construction on the $72 million project began in late 2018.

The project is expected to be completed sometime in 2020.

See below a video from WSDOT’s YouTube channel showing what the new flow of traffic will soon look like.

The new interchange comes as the city of Lacey projects more than 20,000 people and hundreds of new jobs will be coming into the area through 2035.
