A hiker was killed in a rockfall on a trail in Mount Rainier National Park Thursday.

The hiker separated from his group of four at about 1:30 p.m. to travel cross-country.

At about 2:30 p.m., rocks were seen falling in the area of the Eagle Peak Trail in the Tatoosh Range. The rockfall was reported to park officials by witnesses about two hours later.

A chopper was launched to survey the scene, and those aboard spotted the unresponsive hiker in the rockfall.

The hiker’s body was removed via helicopter later that day.
