Two men shot by deputies near Tacoma

TACOMA, Wash. — Two men are in the hospital after they were shot by deputies near Tacoma.

The incident happened shortly after midnight Tuesday in the Midland area of unincorporated Pierce County.

Pierce County deputies said they tried to stop a Ford F250 pickup that had been seen driving recklessly and doing "doughnuts" in the 7200 block of Golden Given Rd. E.

When deputies tried to pull the truck over, it sped off southbound on Golden Given Road at about 70 mph before losing control, hitting a fence and spinning the pickup around to face officers at 96th St. E.

As officers approached the truck on foot and began to give the men commands to exit the truck, the driver accelerated toward the deputies.

Three deputies opened fire. The 33-year-old driver and his 37-year-old passenger were both shot. They were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Deputies determined the truck had been stolen from an auto repair business on 122nd St. E. about two weeks earlier.
