Soldier killed after defending woman at party

Pierce County, Wash. — A Joint Base Lewis McChord soldier died Sunday defending a woman stabbed by a former boyfriend, investigators from the Pierce County Sheriff's Department said.

Detectives said Chase Devyer attacked the woman, stabbing her because she didn't want to see him anymore. "The girl rejected him, or they'd been on some dates, either way he ended up getting mad about it and stabbed her in the back," said Detective Ed Troyer. When the soldier tried to intervene he was stabbed and died at the scene. His name is not being released pending notification of his family. All three were at an after-hours party at a home in the 9800 block of 185th Street East.

Troyer said Devyer then robbed another woman at the home and left, leading deputies on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash on Canyon Road East. Even then Devyer refused to surrender according. "(He) came out, wasn't cooperative with us, we had to tase him which put him down and we were able to get him into custody," Troyer said.

The woman's name has not been released. She was taken to a hospital in Tacoma for treatment and is expected to survive.
