Dave Matthews raises 12th Man flag atop Space Needle, declares himself a 'flag erector'

SEATTLE — Dave Matthews found himself atop the Space Needle Thursday morning to help hoist the 12th Man flag to the top.  But the Seattle musician and superstar said he was almost too shy to show up.

“I was encouraged by my kids who looked at me like I was crazy,” said Dave.  “They're like ‘are you out of your mind!’ So then I obediently said of course. They reminded me what it's about and I'm really excited.”

Dave (as he most notably goes by) has lived in Seattle for 15 years and says he really got swept up into the Seahawks frenzy last year when he went to the 49ers game.  You Seahawks fans who are still shaking from the NFC Championship game should know this rock star is too.

KIRO 7 asked Dave if he’s the type of fan who yells at the tv.

“No, I have terrible anxiety,” said Dave. “The last game against the Packers nearly killed me, but at the end it was sort of liberating.”

When asked who is his favorite Seahawks player, Dave said it's the 12th Man.

“It's a really cool thing to be a part of and feel like you belong to something,” said Dave.

He grabbed the cable and hoisted the giant blue flag to the top.

“Go Hawks,” Dave triumphantly screamed.

This 12th Man flag has a special tie to last year's Super Bowl.  It is the exact same flag that flew the week before last year's Super Bowl win.  The flag that flew for the NFC Championship was tattered by 80 mile per hour winds.  It is now being signed by fans and will go on a tour around Seattle over the weekend.

Other notable quotes from Dave Matthews at the Space Needle:

To KIRO 7 anchor John Knicely: “I guess you could call me a flag erector now.”

To photographers: “I prefer you shoot me from the back.  My butt looks better than my face.”

To KIRO 7 producer Kyla Grace: “Do you like my scarf?  How about the cardigan?  I’ve become a cardigan guy.”

To the crowd as he stood next to the giant 12th Man flag: "Does this flag make my butt look big?"
