Seniors evacuated when Kirkland retirement home catches fire

KIRKLAND, Washington — Several seniors at a Kirkland retirement community were evacuated Monday after an apparent fire at the complex.

Unconfirmed reports were that a fire broke out on the roof or in the attic of the Madison House Retirement Center in Totem Lake. Chopper 7 flew overhead and saw that firefighters had cut a large hole in the roof, presumably to vent smoke and heat.

The building was evacuated, and many of its residents were seated in chairs in the parking lot outside.

No injuries were immediately reported.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
