SEATTLE — A Seattle City Council committee starts work Monday afternoon on the mayor's proposal to raise the minimum wage in the city to $15 an hour.

In his proposal on Thursday, Ed Murray announced a business-labor compromise that would phase in pay raises over seven years, depending on the size of the business.

A group led by socialist City Council member Kshama Sawant is gathering signatures to put a $15 Now initiative on the November ballot.

A $15 minimum wage would give Seattle the highest minimum wage of any city in the nation.
