Road work begins on MLK Jr. Way between Renton, Tukwila

RENTON, Wash. — Drivers on SR 900 between Tukwila and Renton could face slowdowns as crews start a major project to fix cracked roads and patch potholes Monday.

Three miles of SR 900, or Martin Luther King Jr. Way, will have more than 50 concrete panels removed and replaced in a multi-million dollar project to rebuild what the Washington State Department of Transportation calls a failing section of the road.

There is also a section near the north end where all the concrete will be replaced with asphalt and some of the highway's shoulders will also be repaved.

The work will occur between the Tukwila north city limits and the SR 167 intersection.  See a map of  the project area here.

WSDOT says drivers should plan on daytime and overnight two-lane closures in both directions. A weekend closure of the highway may also be required.

The section of SR 900 carries 29,000 vehicles each day.

The majority of the work is expected to be finished by this fall.
