Hiker found after emergency beacons trigger search

GOLD BAR, Wash. — A hiker who activated an emergency beacon, alerting rescuers, was found safe after spending the night on Mount Persis.

The Snohomish County Mountain Rescue search team found the 39-year-old Seattle man and his dog Thursday morning.

The sheriff's office said the man had gotten off-route as he looked for his dog.  He found the dog stuck in a tree well, but it was dark when he freed the animal.

He activated the SOS function on his spot messenger around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday from a location around 2400 feet in elevation on the mountain north of Mount Index, and he stayed in place until searchers found him.
