Ammonia leak shuts down Ballard Bridge

SEATTLE - An ammonia leak near Fisherman's Terminal shut down the Ballard Bridge for a while Thursday evening.

The leak happened in a pipe on a fish processing boat, the Seattle Fire Department said. Roughly 500 pounds of ammonia gas escaped over the course of more than an hour before a hazmat team was able to fix the leak.

One person suffered from burning eyes and was treated, officials told KIRO 7's Gary Horcher.

Firefighters cleared the area around the boat and kept bystanders back as they worked.

No evacuations were ordered.
