Powdered sugar causes hazmat scare in Georgetown

SEATTLE — A popular baking ingredient put into an envelope caused firefighters to respond to a business in Seattle’s Georgetown neighborhood for a possible hazardous materials incident.

According to the Seattle Fire Department, an employee at Veca Electric & Technologies in the 5600 block of Seventh Avenue South opened a letter around 8 a.m. Tuesday and found white powder inside.

Employees called 911.

A hazmat crew responded, tested the powder and determined it was not only harmless, but sweet – powdered sugar.

Seattle police are investigating the source of the envelope.
