3 sickened by Trader Joe's salads that may be contaminated with E. coli

At least three people in Washington have been sickened after eating salads from Trader Joe's.

More than 90 tons of salad with grilled chicken have been recalled across the country.  The food may be contaminated with E. coli.

All of the salads were made by California-based company Glass Onion.

So far, 11 oz. containers of TRADER JOSÉ'S MEXICALI SALAD with Chili Lime Chicken with use by dates from Oct. 1 through Nov. 15 is the only recalled product on the list sold in Washington.

It's one of 16  types of salads, wraps and sandwiches sold across the country that have been recalled by the USDA  for possible E. coli contamination.

In other states, products at Walgreens and Whole Foods were also recalled.

Food Safety attorney Bill Marler believes the bacteria that causes gastrointestinal illnesses likely came from lettuce or other greens, not chicken.

"This particular strain is not found in chicken. In 20 years of doing these kinds of cases, Ive never heard of an E. coli 0157 case linked to chicken," said Marler.

The State Health Department says a woman in King County had to be hospitalized. A Snohomish County man and a Whatcom county woman have also gotten sick from the bacteria. The State says all three tested positive for the same "genetic fingerprint" of the strain of E. coli that may have tainted the recalled meat. All three had eaten salad from Trader Joes.

In all, 26 people across the country have been sicked by the products: 22 from California, one from Arizona and three from Washington.
