UPDATE: Garbage truck driver is hit and run suspect

SEATTLE — A CleanScapes garbage truck driver was responsible for a fatal hit and run collision Thursday in Seattle’s First Hill neighborhood.

Police said they identified the driver, but have not arrested him. The crash happened about 3:30 p.m. in the 800 block of James Street.

The woman victim was crossing the street when she was hit and dragged. She died at the scene.

Witnesses told police the vehicle that struck the pedestrian was a large commercial truck. The roads in the area were closed for authorities to investigate.

Authorities do not know if the driver was aware they had struck the pedestrian.

“Due to the ongoing investigation Recology CleanScapes is prohibited from discussing any of the details surrounding this incident,” company spokesman Kevin Kelly said in a statement. “We are cooperating fully with the authorities to assist them in gathering all of the information they need to make a determination of the cause.”

Anyone who has information about the incident is urged to call Seattle police.
