Updated:FEDERAL WAY, Wash. —
Police said bags of stolen mail were found in a man’s Port Townsend apartment, and officers believe it’s only a portion of the 1,000 pounds of mail that was stolen.
Adam Lysiak was in community custody in Federal Way, but he left the area and stole more than a half-ton of mail, investigators said.
Detectives believe Lysiak waited until it was night to steal from people's mailboxes in Kitsap, Jefferson and other neighboring counties.
Police said they think he was using the mail to steal identities, forge ID cards and pass bad checks.
Detectives found a safe in Lysiak's apartment where they said Lysiak kept specific documents to create fake identities.
Port Townsend police detectives are sorting the mail and plan to start contacting victims by late next week.
Detectives said they want to hear from any businesses in the area who think Lysiak may have used stolen credit cards or checks to buy things from their stores.
The 38-year-old is being held on $250,000 bail at the Jefferson County Jail.
