PUYALLUP, Wash. —

A woman died and a man is in grave condition after they were shot in the head early Sunday morning by their 69-year-old father, police said.

The incident happened at a home in the 1500 block of Fifth Street Southeast.

Just before 3:30 a.m., police received a call from Michael League, who said he shot his adult children.

Dispatchers talked League into putting the gun down and surrendering to police.

When Puyallup police arrived at the location, they surrounded the area and took League into custody in front of the home.

“It was a very tense moment in front of the house,” said Deputy Chief Dan McDonald of the Puyallup Police Department. “Our officers get here. We surround the place and the dispatch tells us that he has put the gun down and he’s coming out.”

Officers entered the home and found League’s 46-year-old son and 43-year-old daughter in different rooms with gunshot wounds to the head. Police said the victims appeared to have been shot in their sleep.

Police also found two boys, ages 6 and 7, and League’s wife, who were not hurt. Police said the man who was shot is the children's father, and live at the home with him and their grandparents. The younger children were taken into protective custody and are under the care of Child Protective Services.

The two victims were taken to Tacoma General Hospital to be treated for their injuries. Police said the woman died and the man is in grave condition.

The Puyallup Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit will continue to investigate the shooting.

League was booked into the Pierce County Jail on murder and attempted murder charges.
