WSP: Passenger killed in I-405 crash

BELLEVUE, Wash. — A 21-year-old passenger died early Saturday morning in a one-car collision on Interstate 405 in Bellevue, according to Washington State Patrol.

The fatal crash happened when a vehicle crashed head-on into a barrier after midnight at Northeast 6th Street, off of I-405.

Before the crash, troopers told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News police attempted to stop a 31-year-old driver in a BMW, who was driving recklessly.

According to police, the car did not stop and continued at high speeds.

About five minutes after the chase, reports of a collision had occurred on I-405, according to Washington State Patrol.

“Bellevue PD was never in pursuit of the car. They only made an attempt to stop the vehicle and when the vehicle did not stop they terminated their attempt to stop the vehicle in the hopes the vehicle would slow down on its own and potentially contact it at a later date,” Washington State Patrol Dan Atchison said.

Police said, a 19-year-old woman was a passenger in the back seat, and she was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. There is no new information of her condition at this time.

The driver attempted to flee the scene, but he was taken into custody.

According state patrol, they believe alcohol was a factor and the incident is still under investigation.
