TUKWILA, Wash. - A gun fight between police and an armed, masked gunman near Southcenter Mall left the gunman dead.

According to Tukwila police spokesman Mike Murphy, it all began at around 7:30 p.m. when the gunman went into the Cash and Carry wholesale food supply store, which is about a block southeast of the mall.

Murphy said the gunman took the manager into the back of the store to get some money.  That is when police got a 911 call from a whispering employee in the front of the store telling them what was going on.  Officers were there within minutes to surround the store.

“As the gunman came out, gunfire ensued,” Murphy said.  “No officers were injured, but the gunman was shot and he is deceased.”

Murphy said who fired first is still under investigation, but he said it does not appear that officers did anything wrong.

Murphy said the officers who fired their weapons will be on administrative leave until another agency can investigate the shooting fully.

With so much of the department on leave, Murphy anticipates a lot of overtime through the holidays to make up the difference in manpower.
