Officers chase teen suspected of DUI in Kirkland

KIRKLAND, Wash. - A 15-year-old boy suspected of driving under the influence was taken into custody after leading police into a chase on Interstate 405 Saturday evening, said the King County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident started before 9 p.m. when a sergeant saw a red Ford van driving erratically without lights on southbound I-405 in Kirkland.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the driver repeatedly swerved abruptly as he continued down I-405.

When the sergeant attempted to stop the driver, a chase started.

The driver crashed the vehicle into a barrier on I-405 near the Southeast 8th Street on-ramp in Bellevue, got out of the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.

The Bellevue Police Department and the Washington State Patrol assisted the King County Sheriff’s Office with the chase.

The Sheriff’s Office’s helicopter, Guardian 1, found the driver as he ran, jumped a fence, hid on a roof and tried to hide.

When officers found the driver, he turned out to be a 15-year-old boy from Kirkland. The boy was suspected of driving under the influence.

The teen was then booked into the Youth Service Center.
