Two killed in Mount Vernon crash

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — A driver and passenger were killed when the car they were in crossed the center line and then was hit by an SUV.

Mount Vernon police were called to the two-vehicle crash in the 3000 block of Little Mountain Road shortly before 9 p.m. Monday.

Officers and medical crews found a silver two-door car in a ditch with significant damage to the passenger side. The adult female driver and adult male front passenger were pinned inside the car.  Both were dead.

The second vehicle, a white mid-size SUV, was in the road and had significant front end damage. The adult male driver of the SUV had minor injuries.

Detectives with Mount Vernon Police and Washington State Patrol were called to the scene to investigate.

Officials say evidence indicated the silver car was heading eastbound on Little Mountain Road and the white SUV was traveling westbound. Police said appears the silver car crossed the center line and was sideways across the westbound lane when it was struck by the SUV.

The driver of the white SUV cooperated with investigators and provided a voluntary blood sample. He was also examined by a Washington State Patrol Drug Recognition Expert. Based on the evaluation, he was released.

The victims were extricated from the vehicle and turned over to the Skagit County Coroner's Office for identification and notification of next of kin.

The road was re-opened for traffic shortly after midnight.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information that would help investigators is asked to call the 24-hour dispatch information number 360-428-3211 or during business hours call Mount Vernon Police at 360-336-6271.
