Police say Ferndale woman fatally stabbed father of her child

FERNDALE, Wash. — The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office said a woman first told police a man killed himself and then later told officers that she was actually responsible for his death.

Deputies were called to a home in the 1000 block of Piper Road in Ferndale shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday for a report of a possible suicide attempt.

The caller told 911 that a man had stabbed himself and she was trying to give him medical aid.

Deputies found the victim, 26-year-old Alberto Mora-Morales, lying on the living room floor with a stab wound on the left side of his neck. Paramedics also arrived and determined that the victim was dead.

Deputies spoke with the woman who had called 911, 22-year-old Jessica Inda.

Police said Inda and her 5-year-old daughter were the only other people home at the time of the stabbing.

A deputy interviewed Inda, who initially said that she was fighting with the victim, but did not know how he was stabbed.

A short time later, Inda asked the deputy if she could tell them the truth, and admitted that she had actually stabbed the victim and also provided the location of the knife used, which she had hidden in the home, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Inda gave a brief statement and then declined further interviews and requested an attorney.

Investigators said it appears that the stabbing happened during a domestic dispute between Inda and Mora-Morales, who are the mother and father of the 5-year-old girl who was also home at the time.

The knife used was recovered, found hidden in a cabinet in the laundry room, as described by the suspect.

Inda was booked into the Whatcom County Jail on one count of second-degree murder.
