Everett witnesses: Woman said ‘get away from me' before firing

EVERETT, Wash. — A shooting just north of Everett High School occurred after witnesses say they heard a man asking for money and his cellphone.

The shooting is not related to high school students or the school. It happened at an apartment complex in the 2300 block of Colby Avenue.

The school was placed into lockdown and students were taken to Everett Memorial Stadium. The lockdown was lifted at 8:20 a.m.

A witness said she was walking to work around 6:45 a.m. when she found herself in the middle of a dispute between a man and woman in downtown Everett.

"She was just saying, leave me alone and he said, 'I know you got money,' and was kind of yelling at her."

Brett Stovall was there too. He said he heard the man asking for his cellphone back.

"He started coming at her a little bit close, a little bit faster, and so finally she brought up the gun and was like, 'get away from me,'" said Stovall.

When she fired the gun, the man fell to the ground in pain, but the shooter, a woman with blonde hair and a white hat, took-off running.

The victim, a 35-year-old man, was shot in the hip and was taken to Providence Hospital.

Police used a K-9 to search the area, but the search was called off after an hour.

It is unclear if the two knew each other.
