Dog missing after crash seeks refuge outside pet store

MONROE, Wash. — A dog that ran from a car involved in a crash on State Route 522 in Monroe Sunday night was found sitting in front of a closed pet store Monday morning.

The chocolate lab, Zaley, was missing following a crash on the eastbound SR 522 exit ramp to US 2 that left four people hurt.

Police say Zaley ran away from the crash that happened about 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Officers say a 17-year-old girl crossed the center lane and crashed head-on into another car.

There were three people, two adults and a baby,  and a dog in the second vehicle.  All four people involved in the crash were hurt but are expected to be OK.

Meanwhile, KIRO 7 learned the dog had been found when viewers posted photos of the dog on the KIRO 7 Facebook page.

Photos showed Zaley sitting outside the Moroe Pet Pros, which was not yet open. Another photo showed the dog in the back seat of a Monroe police car.

Breanna Findley says she was heading into work next to the Pet Pros shop off Highway 2, when she spotted a dog sitting by the front door of the store.

“I came from my truck and I saw him lying there soaking wet,” says Findley. “I had no idea it was the same dog from the accident last night.”

She found that out after posting the picture of the dog on the website “Lost Dogs of Snohomish County” hoping to track down its owners.

Police confirmed that they contacted the dog’s owner, who came and retrieved the pet.

Zaley’s owner told KIRO 7 the dog appears to be doing okay but she will get him checked out at the vet just as a precaution.

Police say they are happy to reunite the dog with his family.

“This is very traumatic for the family to have that many family members injured,” says Willis. “To get their dog back I think it’s the start of their healing process.”
