Navy doctor accused of harassing, stalking female patient

A U.S. Navy doctor has had his license to practice medicine suspended after a female patient accused him of harassing her, stalking her and threatening to ruin her husband's career in the Navy.

Dr. Steven Bernick, 45, is a lieutenant commander with the Navy and gastroenterologist at the Naval hospital in Bremerton.

According to the suspension issued by the Washington State Department of Health, Bernick inappropriately touched the woman during an examination, commented on her "beauty," and sent her text messages that included shirtless pictures of himself.

Bernick is also accused of calling the woman when she cancelled appointments with him, discouraging her from seeing other doctors.

The suspension notice states when the woman filed a complaint , Bernick contacted her, threatening to ruin her husband's naval career.

The Navy suspended Bernick's medical privileges last month. A notice of suspension from the Medical Quality Assurance Commission was issued Feb. 3.

The Bremerton Police Department also investigated the claims. The case was referred to the Kitsap County Prosecuting Attorney's Office but so far no criminal charges have been filed.
