Mercer Street, SR 99 reopen; new configuration now in effect

SEATTLE — Mercer Street and State Route 99 reopened Sunday after weekend closures, said officials with the Seattle Department of Transportation.

Mercer Street and SR 99 were closed for construction as part of the West Phase of the Mercer Corridor project, which started late Friday night.

On Sunday morning, Mercer Street reopened and SR 99 reopened later in the afternoon.

Officials said crews completed the traffic shifts on Mercer Street in preparation for demolishing the east half of the State Route 99 bridge over Mercer Street and widening Mercer Street between Fifth Avenue North and Dexter Avenue North.

SDOT officials said the new configuration of Mercer Street is now in effect and drivers will expect the following:

  • Mercer Street reduced to two eastbound lanes between Fourth Avenue North and Ninth Avenue North.
  • Local access maintained at Taylor Avenue North.
  • The sidewalk on the north side of Mercer Street is closed between Fifth Avenue North and Dexter Avenue North.  The sidewalk on the south side of Mercer Street will remain open.
  • Broad Street open to two-way traffic.
